Badgers sweep Lions on senior day

The Brock Badgers baseball team swept their doubleheader on Saturday (Sept. 30), taking down the York Lions 5- 1 and 4-2 at George Taylor Field.

Game 1: Brock 5 York 1

Brock got the day started with a 5-1 victory.

The Badgers took the lead in the bottom of the second inning, scoring a run.

York matched Brock's output with a run of their own in the top of the fourth. The Badgers were unfazed, putting two across in the bottom half of the same inning.

Brock padded their lead with a two-run sixth.

The Badgers were led by their first two hitters in the order in third baseman Randy Phelan and outfielder Ethan Pasco, who both finished with two hits apiece. Pasco led the team with 2 runs batted in, while Phelan and Cole Carpenter added one RBI each.

Starting pitcher Drew McArthur delivered a brilliant performance, going six innings. The product gave up four hits and one unearned run, while adding two strikeouts. Vidal came in relief, pitching one inning and only giving up one walk.

The Badgers played a clean game in the field, giving up no errors as compared to York's two.

Game 2: Brock 4 York 2

The Badgers doubled up the Lions in the second game of the doubleheader.

The Lions struck first with a run in the top of the second inning, but the Badgers exploded for four runs in the bottom half.

A run in the fourth was not enough for the Lions as the Badgers used strong pitching from Dante Cifala to seal the win.

The Badgers got a balanced hitting performance as six different Badgers ( Cole Carpenter, Reid Lunney, Flynn Matheson, Randy Phelan, Bryn Sanford, Joseph Vetrone) got involved. Runs batted in came courtesy of the bats of Lumney, Matheson and Stanford.

Starter Noah Mitchell went two innings, giving up only one earned run, one hit and one walk, while delivering two strikeouts. Ciafla came in relief and finished the last five innings, surrendering four hits and one earned run and striking out four Lions' hitters.

Before the game, the four seniors Noah Polesky (MSc. Biomechanics), Bryn Sanford (Teacher Education), Justin Mombourquette (Sport Management), Peter Valla (Sociology) were honoured and celebrated for their contributions to the baseball program.

The Badgers were also joined by Zoe Falardeau, daughter of assistant coach Jay Falardeau, for the opening pitch. Falardeau is a member of the Ontario 16U and 21U women's baseball teams, who won both gold and silver medals at the national championships this past summer.

Up next, the Badgers (6-4) travel to Dan Lang Field in Scarborough, Ont. to finish their regular season against the TMU Bold. The two games will take place at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
