The Brock Badgers baseball team recorded dominant wins by scores of 14-4 and 6-1 in their doubleheader on Sunday (Oct. 1) against the TMU Bold at Dan Lang Field.
Game 1: Brock 14 TMU 4
Brock mercy ruled TMU in their first game, with an emphatic 14-4 win.
The Badgers started off hot, putting up three runs in the top of the first.
TMU tried clawing into Brock's lead, bringing in a run in the bottom of the third. Brock added an important run in the top of the fourth as TMU followed them with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
The top of the fifth saw the Badgers take a commanding 8-3 lead before TMU put up their last run in the bottom half.
Brock's phenomenal offensive output did not stop there as the top of the sixth saw the Badgers put six runs up on the board, ending the game in a mercy rule over TMU.
The middle of the order in Brock's lineup provided plenty of run support in the opening game. Cole Carpenter, Flynn Matheson and Ben Grant all recorded three hits each, while Bryn Sanford (2), Ashton Feijo (1), Noah Polesky (1) and Adam Geddes (1) rounded out the rest of the hits for the Badgers.
Carpenter led the way for the Badgers on the scoresheet, bringing in four RBIs, while Sanford and Matheson had three RBIs of their own. Reid Lunney drove in an RBI and recorded a walk.
Daniel Howat picked up the win for Brock Badgers, throwing five innings before the game was ended by mercy rule, allowing just three earned runs and six hits. Howat struck out three TMU batters and gave up two walks as Brock came away with a massive win.
Brock was perfect in fielding as they recorded no errors to TMU's one.
Game 2: Brock 6 TMU 1
After a big opening win, Brock continued their form, taking the victory in the second match over the TMU Bold 6-1.
The Badgers got the bats going early, putting up three runs in the top of the first.
Brock added two insurance runs in the top of the second as TMU added their first and only run of the game in the bottom half.
The final run was added in the top of the fourth by Brock, making the scoreline 6-1.
Brock's second win of the day saw 12 different batters make their way up to the plate as well as two pinch-runners. Randy Phelan, Carpenter, Matheson and Grant all had one hit apiece. Grant led the way with two RBIs as Ethan Pasco and Carpenter had one RBI each.
Evan Marks had the start for Brock, going three innings and giving up two hits plus a run. Marks struck out three of TMU's batters and walked just one. Charlie Hughes came into relief for Marks, going two innings for the Badgers. Hughes struck out three, giving up no hits or runs in the process. Kiva Salzman and Jack Tiessen pitched an inning each, with both pitchers picking up a strikeout.
Brock walked away with just one error in the game while TMU had three of their own.
Up next, the Badgers (8-4) will compete at the OUA West Qualifier on Saturday, Oct. 6 and Sunday, Oct. 7 in Hamilton. The Badgers will compete in a round robin with the McMaster Marauders and Guelph Gryphons on Saturday before the elimination round takes place on Sunday. The winner of the qualifier will earn a bid to the OUA championship taking place at Bernie Arbour Stadium in Hamilton from October 13 to October 14.
