Three-peat triumph: Brock men's rowing secures OUA Championship victory

It was a triumphant day on the waters for the Brock Badgers.

The Badgers captured their third consecutive Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Men's Rowing Championship at Henley Island in Port Dalhousie on Saturday, Oct. 28.

Charles-Etienne Tabet, a first-year Economics student from Boucherville, Quebec, was named OUA Men's Rower of the Year while Brock coaches Tom Kent and Scott Anderson received the OUA Men's Varsity Coach of the Year Award.

The Brock men's team won five gold medals and two silver while accumulating a total of 524 points ahead of Western (443) and Queen's (278); the Brock women's team finished third with a total of 212 points behind first-place Queen's (496) and Western (408).

"It's a very intense time of year for our student-athletes, so it's all about finding that balance," said Brock head coach Mary Rao. "We came into the season with a group of men who had strong connections with everyone on the team, which allowed them to stay focused this season and provide a great environment for peak performances."

The victory marks the 14th provincial banner in program history for the Badgers.

Rao, alongside Queen's head coach Katie Bruggeling, become the first time in OUA rowing history which two female head coaches have won banners together.

Rao and Bruggeling coached together for Rowing Canada at the Under-23 World Championships this past summer. They both won bronze with their respective crews.

The Brock women enjoyed four podium finishes with a gold, two silver and a bronze.

"Our women's team was a slightly smaller, more focused varsity group which performed their best and continue a team culture of success," added Rao. "We have a group of leaders who are inspiring our younger student-athletes on the team, which is special to foster those relationships and building success in the future for our women's program."

Zoe and Isabella Durcak captured gold in the women's lightweight double, an event they've dominated throughout the season.

Tabet captured a pair of gold medals after winning the men's lightweight single and men's lightweight double alongside teammate Riley Watson.
