The Brock Badgers rowing team received a boost to its roster before competing at the national university rowing championships this weekend.
Brock's two-time Athlete of the Year,
Stephen Harris, will compete for the Badgers in three boats at the Canadian University Rowing Championships (CURC) at Burnaby Lake in British Columbia from Nov. 10-12.
Harris, a fourth-year Economics student from Guelph, recently returned from competing for Canada with former Brock rower
Michael Ciepiela at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile in late October.
Harris relocated to Vancouver, BC to work with the national team, which meant he's completing his studies remotely to accommodate for training.
"I've had the opportunity to race against some of the best athlete in the sport. Their level of fitness provides me the motivation to train harder," Harris said. "This process has come with a lot of new challenges, but returning to a high level of competition after contracting infectious mononucleosis this winter was all part of the plan."
Harris is working towards being selected in the men's lightweight single to compete at the World University Championships in Rotterdam next July before competing at the 2024 World Rowing Senior, U23 and U19 Championships in St. Catharines from Aug. 18-25.
This weekend, Harris will suit up for Brock in three different events at CURCs: the men's single, men's lightweight double and men's lightweight four.
Results throughout the weekend will be posted on
Regatta Central.
