Both the men's and women's fencing teams for the Brock Badgers attended the team-based Royal Military College of Canada Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 4 to Sunday, Nov. 5.
Both épee teams finished ninth for the Badgers over the weekend, the highest finish for any Brock team.
On the men's side, the team of Nicholas Gutierrez-Sarabia, Nathaniel McDonnell, Karl Stang and Dhairya Shah won their first two matches, besting the Waterloo Warriors 45-22 and the Western Mustangs 45-23. The Badgers ran into a strong Army Black Knights squad who defeated the Badgers 45-39.
Sarah Wilson, Danielle Martin, Akanksha Guleria and Tamara Tait comprised the women's side who also placed ninth. After defeating both the McMaster Marauders 45-34 and the TMU Bold 45-38, the team ran into McMaster again in direct elimination play and dropped a close 45-43 match.
The relatively young women's foil team earned 23rd, after dropping matches to both the Toronto Varsity Blues 45-18 and the Toronto Fencing Club (45-10). Sara Fellman, Addison Mahoney, Alex Francoz and Wylan Clitheroe look to build on some of the lessons learned from this past weekend for their next competition.
Ethan Ciolfi, Benjamin Wignall, Samuel Dalbayrak and Darius Williams placed 22nd in men's sabre, after dropping matches to the Carleton Ravens 45-18 and Queen's Gaels 45-40. The close result with the Gaels should be a building block for this team for the rest of the season.
Up next, the Badgers host the Brock Invitational at Ian D. Beddis Gymnasium on Saturday, Nov. 17 and Sunday, Nov, 18.
