Addison Mahoney placed 19th in the foil event at the 2025 Women's Fencing Championship that took place on Saturday, Feb. 8 and Sunday, Feb. 9 in Kingston.

Women’s fencing gains valuable experience at provincial championship

The Brock Badgers women's fencing team placed 12th at the 2025 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Women's Fencing Championship in Kingston. 

The two-day competition took place from Saturday, Feb. 8 and Sunday, Feb. 9 at the Queen's Athletics and Recreation Centre. 

Coming in first was the Toronto Varsity Blues with 346 points while the Western Mustangs had 307 for second and the host Queen's Gaels came third with 143.

On Day 1, the Badgers saw their top performance come in the sabre event as Isamaris Escano placed 11th out of 37 competitors. 

Escano went 2-3 in Round 1 of pool action before rebounding with a 4-2 record in the second round of pools. In the direct elimination round, the Burlington product was seeded No. 10 where she would defeat Lucy Choi of Western 15-5 before falling to Waterloo's Angela Li 15-8 in the Round of 16. 

Tiffany Muhindi placed 17th in a field of 44 in epee and started out strong in pool play, going a combined 8-3. Seeded 10th, Muhindi dropped her first match in the direct elimination round 15-11 to Mayeen Ayoub of the Carleton Ravens. 

Rounding out the top individual results was Addison Mahoney who took home a 19th place finish out of 42 participants in the foil event. After going 5-6 in two rounds of pool play, Mahoney was seeded No. 18 in the direct elimination round. Her opponent Zoe Waller of the Carleton Ravens won a competitive match 15-10. 

The Badgers then took to the pistes for team competition on the second day.  

Mahoney, Wylan Clitheroe and Alex Francoz made up the foil team that dropped a close 45-40 matchup with the TMU Bold. Their tournament run ended after dropping a match to the Toronto Varsity Blues 45-21. 

The epee group of Muhindi, Lara Sulzer and Bryn Thomas dropped two matches in pool play including a tight 45-39 battle with the McMaster Marauders and a 45-14 decision to the Carleton Ravens. 

In the sabre team event, the Badgers were represented by Escano, Danyel Moore and Emily Schilling. The group fought valiantly but fell in matches to the Ottawa Gee-Gees (45-17) and host Queen's Gaels (45-23).
