LONDON - Traveling to London for the OUA Championships, hosted by Western University, both the Brock Badgers men's and women's swimming teams saw improved results with the men placing sixth overall, and the women finishing seventh.
"This was a very successful meet for us," noted Brock Badgers swimming head coach Dave Ling. "We knew coming in that what we were looking for was improvement and we saw exactly that with both our men and women finishing two spots higher in the overall standings compared to just a year ago."
In the pool for the men, the Badgers were led by a trio of A-Final outings by third-year veteran
Julien Legault who placed fifth in both the 50m backstroke and 100m backstroke. Legault rounded out his three-day performance reaching his third A-Final for the 200m backstroke, while placing eighth overall in his final individual race. Along with the major points he was able to bring in for the team achievement, Leagault also set a new Brock program school record with a time of 56.72 in the 100m event.
Other big performers for the men's team included;
Anthony Gunn, who also established a new Brock program record swimming a 55.83 in the men's 100m fly enroute to a 12th place result;
Blake Bishop, who raced to an 11th place result in the men's 200m backstroke;
Hughie Edwards, finishing right beside Bishop for 12th in the 200m backstroke; and Chris Ball, who placed 14th in the 100m freestyle, 14th in the 50m backstroke, and 16th in the 100m backstroke. Leagult and Gunn also joined
Anthonie Korstanje and
Liam McKenna to score a fifth place finish in the men's 4x50m medley relay.
For the women, first-year sensation
Jami Fuson proved to be the Badgers top scorer achieving an 11th place result in the 800m freestyle and a 14th place finish in the 400m individual medley. The women also had strong showings in the relay events as Fuson along with
Paje Brennan,
Mara Di Persio, and
Mackenzie Damiano finished sixth in the 4x200m freestyle relay, before Fuson also joined
Chloe Smith,
Noemie Ringuette, and McKenna Clark to earn a seventh place result in the 4x100m freestyle race.
Following the OUA Championships, the Badgers will have one swimmer in Korstanje heading to the U SPORTS National Championships, after he delivered a national qualifying time in his breaststroke specialty earlier this season. The national even is set to be hosted by the University of Victoria from Feb. 23-26.
