Badgers taken down by Warriors in doubleheader, Howat throws complete game

The Brock Badgers baseball team suffered a doubleheader sweep (3-0, 6-1) to the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday (Sept. 23) at George Taylor Field.

With the two losses, the Badgers see their overall record go to 3-3.

Game 1: Brock 0 Waterloo 3

Brock dropped a close 3-0 contest to the Warriors to start the doubleheader.

The Warriors started the game with two runs in the top of the first.

In the fifth, Waterloo added an insurance run to take the contest 3-0.

The Badgers mustered four hits in the contest but were unable to bring anyone past home plate. Brock left seven on base compared to Guelph's four.

The story of the game was starting pitcher Daniel Howat, who pitched a complete game. The Brantford, Ont., product gave up three earned runs, five hits and two walks, while striking out nine and throwing 72% of his pitches as strikes.

Ben Grant, Randy Phelan, Noah Polesky and Tim Somerville each registered a hit in the contest.

Game 2: Brock 1 Waterloo 6

The Badgers suffered their second loss of the day, falling 6-1 to the Warriors.

Much like the first contest, Waterloo got on the scoreboard first. The Badgers matched the Warriors run with one of their own in the bottom half.

A four-run sixth inning gave the Warriors a large cushion as they took a 6-1 lead.

Joseph Vetrone got the lone RBI for the Badgers on the day, bringing home Bryn Sanford in the first.

Along with Sanford and Vetrone, Cole Carpenter, Ethan Pasco and Peter Valla notched hits in the contest.

The Badgers had four pitchers take the bump. Drew McArthur had a team-high 4.2 innings pitched in the contest, giving up five hits, one earned run and delivering four strikeouts. Charlie Hughes came in relief and gave up four earned runs off three hits in 1.2 innings. Blake Vidal pitched 0.1 innings, while Jack Kemp came in the seventh and finished with one strikeout.

Up next, the Badgers (3-3) are on the road to take on the Guelph Gryphons (5-3) on Sunday Sept. 24 at George Taylor Field at noon and 3 p.m.
