It was a great start to the year for the Brock Badgers men's swimming team.
In their dual meet against the Guelph Gryphons, the Badgers earned an impressive 852.5 points compared to just 279.5 from their opponent at the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Sprint Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 19.
Coming back home on Sunday, Oct. 20, the Badgers also saw four podium finishes at the Brock Invitational at the Eleanor Misener Aquatic Centre.
OUA Sprint Invitational
The Badgers swept all seven events in a commanding performance on the water.
Evan Karlov finished in first in three different races to lead the Badgers. In the 50-metre freestyle event, he touched the wall in 24 seconds and 55 milliseconds, and he finished the 50m-butterly in a time of 27 seconds and 45 milliseconds.
Karlov then partnered with Julien Legault, Blake Bishop and Jared Banta in the 400m freestyle relay (3:47.32) for another first-place showing.
First-year swimmer Camren Courchene-Carter also impressed, earning first in the 100m IM (1:02.84) and 50m breaststroke (30.33).
In the 50m backstroke, Legault claimed first with a time of 28.23 while in the 400m medley relay, Jackson Bates, Lucas Moavro, Evan Thomas and Zac Monminie finished in a time of 4:07.25 to win.
In addition, Courchene-Carter also placed second with teammates Alex Walker, Drew Emmerton and Daniel Zaki in the 400m freestyle (3:55.73).
The Badgers saw a total of five second-place showings and five third-place finishes at the invitational.
Brock Invitational
Competing against multiple schools including the Guelph Gryphons, Laurier Golden Hawks, McMaster Marauders and York Lions, the Badgers continued their strong showing at their home Brock Invitational.
Moavro had the top result for the Badgers, placing first in the 200m IM in 2:12.50.
A Badgers school record was broken as Courchene-Carter touched the wall in 28.99 in the 50m breaststroke to place third.
Legault followed up his gold medal in the 50m backstroke (28.23) at the OUA Sprint Invitational with a better time of 27.49 at the Brock Invitational. This would earn him a second-place result.
Rounding out the Badgers' top three showings was Karlov who finished in 24.10 to come second in the 50m freestyle event.
Up next, the Badgers stay at home for the Brock/Walker Invitational, a club meet, on Saturday Oct. 26 and Sunday, Oct. 27 at the Eleanor Misener Aquatic Centre
