Four-peat complete: Brock men’s rowing wins 15th provincial title in program history

The Brock Badgers men's rowing team dynasty continues.

On their home course of Henley Island in Port Dalhousie, the Badgers earned their fourth consecutive Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Men's Rowing Championship on Friday, Oct. 25.

The Badgers made an appearance on the podium in all 10 events as they placed first overall with 171 total points. The medal haul for the Badgers included five gold medals, three silvers and two bronze. Coming in second was the Western Mustangs (165) while the Toronto Varsity Blues earned third (111).

"We're thrilled that the men's team has won four consecutive championships; a historic first for the program," said Head Coach Katie Bruggeling. "This remarkable group of athletes and coaches is truly exceptional, and we're proud of all their work that's led to this result."

For his standout performance, Charles-Etienne Tabet was named the OUA Male Rower of the Year for the second consecutive season. This marks the first time in program history, a rower has won this award twice in their university career.

Tabet won the men's lightweight double with Connor Dodds, finishing in a time of six minutes, 44 seconds and 918 milliseconds.

He then partnered with Dodds once again along with Archer LaRochelle, Riley Watson and coxswain Serafina Dell (6:24.005) for a tight first-place finish over the Queen's Gaels (6:25.279) in the men's lightweight four.

Three more boats earned first-place finishes including Stephen Harris (men's lightweight single - 7:14.265), Michael Ciepiela (men's single - 7:06.661) and the team of Ian Doctor and Keithan Woodhouse (men's double, 6:37.875).

Harris, Ciepiela, Doctor and Woodhouse also picked up a silver medal, partnering with Maddox Harrison, Christopher Gomez, Riley Watson, Euan Coulson and coxswain Serafina Dell in the men's eight (5:46.068).

In the men's pair, Harrison and Gomez took home a silver medal with a time of 6:57.151.

The final silver medal performance came from the men's four (Elijah Lopez, Trevor Andrews, Lucas Fogh, Euan Coulson, c: Alyssa Gray) who crossed the finish line in 6:34.541.

Sawyer Dalton, Ethan Mason, Arden White, Benjamin Molnar, Jonas Masys, Sam Parlatore, Luca Hardy, Christian Moise and coxswain Daniel Phillips finished the men's lightweight eight in a time of 6:10.005 to earn the first of two bronze medals for Brock.

Rounding out the medal performances was the men's lightweight pair of Sawyer Dalton and Benjamin Molnar (7:05.367).

The originally scheduled two-day championship was changed to one day due to potential high winds in the forecast for Saturday.

Up next, the Badgers will travel to the Canadian University Rowing Championship in Elk Lake in Victoria, BC from Friday, Nov. 1 to Sunday, Nov. 3.
