Isabella, Zoe Durcak earn double gold, win OUA Rower of the Year at OUA Championships

Isabella and Zoe Durcak dazzled on the water for the Brock Badgers women's rowing team.

In a shortened one-day championship on Friday, Oct. 25, the Badgers earned three medals and one major award while finishing seventh at the 2024 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Championships at Henley Island in Port Dalhousie.

"The results of the women's team is exciting, and an excellent first step for our program," said Head Coach Katie Bruggeling. "We're firmly committed to continuing to build this program's success in the future."

For their spectacular showing, the Durcaks were awarded the OUA Women's Rower of the Year award. This marks the first time the Badgers have accomplished the feat since Laura Court received the honour in 2018.

The Stoney Creek pair continued their dominance in the lightweight double, winning the event for the third consecutive year.

This time around, they finished the race in a time of seven minutes, 14 seconds and 335 milliseconds; good for more than 10 seconds above the next-best finishing team in the Queen's Gaels.

Before their lightweight double race, they won a gold medal in the women's pair with a time of 7:33.015 to narrowly beat out Claire Ellison and Jacquie Groenewegen of the Queen's Gaels (7:34.890).

Adding to the Badgers' medal total was Jalyn Mowry who captured silver in the women's single, crossing the finish line in 8:00.388.

Mowry partnered with Genavieve Jopling, Mallorie Taylor, Samantha Wimbush and coxswain Daniel Phillips to place fifth in the women's four (7:22.515).

Rounding out the Badgers' performances were Taylor and Wimbush in the women's double and Mia Biancaniello and Delane Clark who particiapted in the mixed adapative double.

The originally scheduled two-day competition was moved to one day due to an anticipated forecast of high winds on Saturday.

Next, the Badgers prepare for the Canadian University Rowing Championship at Elk Lake in Victoria, BC from Friday, Nov. 1 to Sunday, Nov. 3.
