Brock men’s curling gains valuable experience at nationals

The Brock Badgers men's curling team took their talents to the East Coast where they concluded their season at the U SPORTS Men's Curling Championship in Fredericton, NB.

"It was certainly not what we hoped, but there were vital lessons learned throughout," said men's head coach Jordan Thin. "What I'm proud of is the positive spirit they showed throughout which is an excellent quality to have and one that helps in all walks of life."

Starting on Tuesday, March 12 and concluding on Saturday, March 16, the Badgers competed in seven round-robin matches.

In a rematch of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) semifinal, Brock bested Guelph once again with this time's showdown resulting in a tight 7-6 win that took 11 ends. After the Gryphons tied things up at 6-6 in the tenth end, the Badgers earned the final point in the 11th to win the thrilling contest.

For Thin and the Badgers, the scorelines and matchups against the top teams should bring optimism for what's to come next year.

The Badgers had big comeback attempts that came up just short against the eventual gold medalist Regina Cougars and the Canada West champion and eventual bronze medalist Alberta Golden Bears. In their Regina matchup, Brock brought the score to 7-6 in the ninth before ultimately falling by an 8-6 scoreline. The Golden Bears used a three-point 11th end to win after the Badgers tied the contest with a key point in the tenth.

Rounding out the results for the Badgers were matches against the AUS champion Dalhousie Tigers, the OUA champion Laurier Golden Hawks, UNB Reds and Saint Mary's Huskies.
