Hughes dazzles, Badgers spilt Saturday series with Lancers

The Brock Badgers baseball team settled for a doubleheader spilt with the Windsor Lancers at George Taylor Field.

Coming off a sweep at the Guelph Gryphons on Tuesday, Sept. 10, the Badgers bounced back with a 5-0 win in Game 1 before falling 5-4 to the Windsor Lancers in Game 2 on Saturday, Sept. 14.

Game 1: Brock 5 Windsor 0

Second-year pitcher Charlie Hughes was sensational on the bump, delivering seven innings without surrendering a single run. Hughes gave up just four hits and struck out five batters while walking only one.

The Badgers helped out Hughes by breaking the deadlock in the bottom of the fourth.

Tim Somerville, a 5-10 infielder/pitcher, notched a team-high two runs batted in (RBI) with a double, which was followed later with a successful steal home.

Adding two insurance runs in the sixth helped give the Badgers the cushion they needed to shut out the visiting Lancers.

Reid Lunney, Ethan Pasco and Nolan Phelan all contributed to the Badgers' cause with two hits each.

In the win, the Badgers outhit the Lancers by a count of 8-4.

Neither team had defensive miscues in the field with both teams giving up zero errors in the contest.

Game 2: Brock 4 Windsor 5

After giving up a five-run fourth inning, the Badgers showed off a lot of resilience, fighting within one run of a tie by the game's end.

Phelan led the Badgers with two RBI, getting the scoring started in the bottom of the sixth with a double that brought home Tyson Gomm and Flynn Matheson.

Back-to-back singles from Ashton Feijo and Matheson brought the Badgers close in the final frame but the Lancers held on for the doubleheader spilt.

Getting the start was Jack Tiessen who went 3.2 innings. Tiessen gave up five runs (all earned) but did strike out five while giving up four hits.

Wilson Michel, RJ Moniz and Kiva Salzman all appeared on the mound for the Badgers in relief of Tiessen.

The hits were even in the contest at 5-5.

Brock continued their flawless defence, giving up zero errors compared to Windsor's one in Game 2.

Up next, the Badgers will play two exhibition contests against the TMU Bold on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
