Badgers flourish in triumphant win over Varsity Blues

Brock emerged victorious as they hosted the 18th annual Shoot for the Cure game.

The Brock Badgers women's basketball team left the Bob Davis Gymnasium with an outstanding 80-52 win on Sunday, Jan. 19 against the Toronto Varsity Blues, carrying their momentum from the Paint the Meridian Red contest.

Fourth-year guard Madalyn Weinert excelled with a game-high 23 points and nine rebounds while fifth-year guard Angeline Cambell was not far behind with 13 points.

A strong defensive start, thanks to second-year guard Jamie Addy and her three steals, helped the Badgers take an early 21-12 lead.

In the second quarter, the Badgers thrived, taking a 24-point lead as the offence clicked. The hosts scored 30 points in the frame and shot 60 per cent from the field leading into the midway point of the game.

Brock refused to take their foot off the brake in the third quarter as they extended their lead to 75-39 with flawless ball movement, draining five three-pointers and shooting 62.5 per cent from the field.

The Varsity Blues showed resilience in the final quarter, outscoring the Badgers 13-5, but Brock was deemed too much to handle as they dribbled away with a commanding victory by a score of 80-52.

Olivia Fiorucci had 11 points of the bench, scoring 3-for-4 from beyond the arc.

Brock shot 42.4 per cent while Toronto shot 33.3 per cent from the field.

Before the game, the Badgers wore pink warmup shirts as part of the U SPORTS campaign for breast cancer research and awareness known as Shoot for the Cure. The overall fundraising goal is $100,000 and donations can be made online.
