Lo Greco strikes gold in international tournament

Members of the Brock Badgers women's wrestling team delivered strong results at the Kolbotn Cup.

Three wrestlers competed and represented Team Ontario in the one-day freestyle women's wrestling competition held at the Stil Arena in Oslo, Norway, on Saturday, Nov. 22.

Francesca Lo Greco, a third-year athlete, defeated two wrestlers from Norway and one from Japan en route to a gold medal in the under-20 55-kilogram event.

"Winning my first international tournament makes me really happy," Lo Greco said. "It is great to see my hard work pay off, but there's still more work to do."

Along with Lo Greco's medal result, the Badgers earned another podium finish through Cassie Corbett.

Corbett captured third place in the U20 72kg weight class with a 2-2 record, picking up wins over an Ontario wrestler and a Norwegian one, while falling to athletes from Japan and Norway.

Brock assistant coach Hannah Taylor was impressed with how the team performed.

"It was great to see our girls have a strong showing at an international tournament here in Norway," Taylor said. "The next few days will be spent training with the same international competitors, where we will continue to gain experience. I'm excited to see each of them continue to improve leading into championship season."

Rounding out the Brock Badgers contingent was Olivia Mathezer (57 kg), who placed fifth.
