The crowd at Canada Games Park rained down cheers as the Brock Badgers women's wrestling team celebrated their second consecutive national title.
In a thrilling battle with the Calgary Dinos, the Badgers came out on top by three points with 70 to capture their 12th overall national banner at the 2025 Wrestling Canada Lutte U SPORTS Invitational Championships which took place from Friday, Feb. 28 to Saturday, March 1.
"It's always great to win a national championship. I know we have won a lot in the past but it's always a new group of people so every time you win it; it feels like the first time," said women's head coach Dave Collie." "Our women's team did a great job putting themselves into position today with their performance yesterday. It's nice to see the hard work these athletes have put in pay off."
Leading the charge for their gold-medal push was Brianna Fraser who won her third consecutive national gold medal in the 83-kilogram division. Fraser defeated Alexia Sherland of the Concordia Stingers by technical fall 14-2 which ended up being the last contest of the whole tournament.
Bronwyn MacGregor won a national medal for the very first time, finishing second in the 65kg weight class after dropping a close 15-10 decision to Mackenzie Cayer of the Calgary Dinos.
Multiple Badgers earned a silver medal for the second time in their careers. Samantha Romero (50kg) last won a silver medal during the 2017-18 season while Vanessa Keefe (68kg) is a silver medallist for the second consecutive year.
Michaela Rankin improved on her bronze medal from a year ago, placing second in the 62kg division.
Rounding out the Badgers' silver medal results is last year's U SPORTS Rookie of the Year Francesca Lo Greco who competed in the 53kg weight category.
In her national championships debut, Olivia Mathezer, a first-year wrestler from Calgary, AB, defeated Natasha Ekundayo from the Alberta Pandas by fall at 3:50 to claim a bronze medal.
Rachel Hall earned a fifth-place finish in the 72kg event with a 11-5 decision over Lakehead's Myla Lawson.
