Rising wrestling star Emma Chartres will be wearing a different shade of red this season as she joins the powerhouse Brock Badgers women's wrestling program.
A member of the renowned Team Impact Wrestling Club, Chartres brings experience as a cadet (U17) national team member and two-time U17 national champion, competing in the 46-kilogram weight class.
"We are very excited to have Emma join our Brock wrestling family," said Brock women's wrestling head coach Dave Collie. "She is one of the top graduating high school wrestlers in the country and comes from an amazing pedigree."
In addition to competing with the cadet national team, Chartres also seized the opportunity to represent Team Ontario, where she secured a fourth-place finish in the 50kg division at the 2024 International Brandenburg Cup in Germany.
With Bill Crothers Secondary School in Unionville, ON, she won a gold medal at the 2025 Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) Wrestling Championships in the 51kg event.
Despite all the accolades, Chartres' path to the varsity level has not been one without adversity.
The Oshawa, ON product spent over eight months rehabbing a dislocated shoulder — an injury sustained during her very first match representing Canada at the 2023 U17 Pan-American Championships.
"I have a really great team around me at Team Impact and my family really supports my dreams," Chartres said. "Having people in my corner kept me wanting to come back."
Chartres cites the dedicated coaches as a major reason for choosing to become a Badger.
"Marty and Dave are very hands-on with the program," Chartres said. "They put in time and effort for each person, and they are as dedicated as the athletes are."
Collie knows exactly the type of athlete Brock is getting. Chartres has had the opportunity to train under the guidance of her father, Dan, a former wrestler and current member of the Team Impact coaching staff.
"We feel she is a great fit for our program and will make an immediate impact on it," Collie said.
Brock represents an opportunity for Chartres to be reunited with some of her role models as she cites current Badgers Mia Friesen and Francesca Lo Greco as important influences.
Friesen, in particular, is someone Chartres has competed alongside over the years and is a fellow lightweight-class wrestler she looks up to.
In choosing Brock University for her post-secondary studies, Chartres will pursue a degree in Biological Sciences, drawn not only by the school's strong academics but also by the small-town feel of its campus.
"On my visit, I was excited to see all the facilities for science students," Chartres said. "Brock felt like home to me, and I love that it's surrounded by nature."
Her time at Brock will mark the next chapter not only in her athletic journey but in her professional aspirations as well.
"I'm really excited for the opportunities and the growth of next year of being around the team and the coaches," Chartres added. "I have the opportunity to start my career path and get to be one step closer to my goal of being a veterinarian."
