Mastroianni, Chartres, York and Dumoulin named Brock University Athletes of the Week

Mason Mastroianni (Welland, Ont.) of the men's wrestling team, Emma Chartres (Oshawa, Ont.) of the women's wrestling team, Tai York (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.) of the men's hockey team and Kaitlyn Dumoulin (Kemptville, Ont.) of the women's curling team were named Brock University Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Feb. 8.

Improving from his bronze-medal performance from a year ago, Mastroianni took home a gold medal in the men's 65-kilogram division at the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Championships on Saturday, Feb. 7, in London, Ont. The Dramatic Arts major won his first two matchups by technical fall, then earned a closely contested 11-6 decision over Gianluca Fortino of the McMaster Marauders to finish off his round robin competition. These three victories earned the fourth-year student athlete a spot in the 65kg finals, a match he won by fall at two minutes and 16 seconds. This result marked Mastroianni's first provincial gold medal in his career and helped the Badgers earn their 10th straight and 27th overall provincial banner.

Making an impactful debut at the 2026 OUA Championships in London, Ont., Chartres earned a gold medal in the women's 50kg division and was named OUA Women's Rookie of the Year. The Biological Sciences major defeated the York Lions' Mina Stewart by fall at 1:21 in her first matchup and then followed it up with a 10-0 win by technical fall against Sarah Jones of the Lakehead Thunderwolves. The first-year student athlete earned another victory by technical fall, besting Guelph Gryphons' Sasha Weldon and securing a spot in the gold medal match. Matched up against Cyenna Trotman of the host Western Mustangs, Chartres secured a 17-6 technical fall victory to finish first in the 50kg weight class. This result helped the Badgers earn their 11th straight women's title and 24th overall.

Over the course of the week, York helped the Badgers go 2-0, accumulating five points across two games. Despite going down 2-0 in the first period during the contest on Wednesday, Feb. 4 against the Western Mustangs, York assisted Stephen Calisti halfway through the second to cut the Mustangs' lead to 2-1. Down 3-2, the General Humanities major scored the tying goal, helping send the game into overtime before Brock scored the game winner three minutes into the extra frame. During the Senior Game on Friday, Feb. 6, against the Waterloo Warriors, the Badgers found themselves down 1-0 at the end of the first. The first-year student athlete picked up right where he left off, scoring two unanswered to put the Badgers up 2-1. He capped off his five-point weekend by assisting the Badgers' fifth goal halfway through the third period.

Hosting the 2026 OUA Championships at Welland Curling Club, Dumoulin and the Badgers finished 3-2 over the weekend and placed sixth out of 16 teams. The second-year lead was voted on and selected as an OUA First-Team All-Star for her ability to set up ends, helping draw the stone to key positions to create an offensive advantage for the team. The Child Health major was key in the Badgers starting the weekend 3-0, including back-to-back seven-end victories, first winning 10-7 over the Windsor Lancers, then 6-3 over the Western Mustangs. Their final victory went the full eight ends, culminating in a 7-6 decision over the Waterloo Warriors. A strong sweeper, Dumoulin is highly respected as a dominant lead across the Ontario curling circuit.
