ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The No. 7 ranked Brock University women's basketball team (10-2 overall, 2-0 OUA) improved to 2-0 in the OUA West as they defeated the University of Toronto Varsity Blues by the score of 66-43 at the Bob Davis Gymnasium Saturday night.
Brock led 18-8 after one quarter and 30-18 at the half. The two teams combined for 39 third quarter points with Brock leading 51-36. The Badgers would lead by as many as 26 points late in the fourth quarter on route to their second straight conference victory.
Leading the Badgers offense was
Kayla Santilli (Brantford, Ont.) who led all scorers with a game-high 21 points including 3-for-6 from beyond the arc and 8-for-8 from the charity stripe.
Nicole Rosenkranz (Niagara Falls, Ont.) contributed with 17 points, eight rebounds and a career high seven steals. Rounding out the Brock scoring leaders were Jenna Yumol (London, Ont.) (6 points, 2-for-2 3PT),
Katie Harpur (Niagara Falls, Ont.) (5 points, 6 rebounds) and
Dayna Howlett (Burlington, Ont.) (5 points).
Toronto was led by Jill Stratton who recorded eight points. Liane Bailey, Rachael Sider and Rahshida Atkinson all chipped in with seven points each in the loss.
For the game, Brock shot 38.1% (24-for-63) from the field, including 46.7% (7-for-15) from beyond the arc. The Varsity Blues shot 27.3% (15-for-55) from the floor while going 6-for-17 (35.3%) from long range. Despite being outrebounded 36-35, the Badgers forced Toronto into 30 turnovers which led to 27 unanswered points.Â
The Badgers will be on the road next weekend when they travel north to take on the Laurentian Voyageurs and expansion Algoma Thunderbirds.
