After capturing numerous awards and setting multiple program records, Madalyn Weinert is heading off to Portugal for her latest adventure on the basketball court.
Weinert signed with Clube Amigos do Basquete Madeira (CAB Madeira) of the Liga Feminina de Basquetebol, the top Portuguese professional women's league, on Saturday, July 25 2026.
"I am truly so excited for the incredible opportunity to play basketball professionally in Portugal," Weinert said. "Not only will I get to compete at a high level, but I am also getting the chance to experience a new culture and see new places around the world."
With the Badgers, Weinert enjoyed an illustrious five-year career, capped off by being named the Brock University Female Athlete of the Year and U SPORTS Women's Basketball Player of the Year. This past season, she also became a three-time Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Player of the Year and First Team All-Star.
The local St. Catharines product led the country and province in scoring for the third straight year as she finished with 530 total points, 24.1 points per game and 196 field goals made.
Equally dominant on the glass, Weinert also finished first in U SPORTS and the OUA in rebounds (317) and rebounds per game (14.4) in 2025-26.
Weinert leaves the University as the program leader in numerous categories, including total points (2,269), rebounds (1,223), field goals made (833), free throws made (514) and total blocks (196), among others.
"Madalyn's career at Brock University was one of legendary status and a body of work that consistently set new standards," said Brock interim head coach Ajay Sharma. "Her decision to play professionally is a natural progression for a player of her stature. While our program will miss her, we are tremendously proud of her and know she will represent Brock University well as she transitions into her professional career."
Her impact also extended to the classroom, where she was a two-time David Atkinson Surgite Award winner and became the first female student-athlete in student history to be named a U SPORTS Top 8 Academic All-Canadian, an honour reserved for four female student-athletes nationwide.
The Badgers made the OUA quarterfinal round in each of Weinert's five seasons, highlighted by a fourth-place finish at the 2021-22 U SPORTS Women's Basketball Championship.
Weinert joins the Funchal-based club, which has won six league titles in its history and were just outside playoff contention last season with a ninth-place finish.
The season is set to begin in early October and runs through late March, followed by the postseason in April-May.
