
GLASGOW - Brock University wrestlers
Jevon Balfour and Jill Gallays both captured medals at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.Â
The 19-year old Balfour had an outstanding performance finishing with a silver medal at 65kg. In four matches he posted a 3-1 record adding victories over Nigeria's Sampson Clarkson (9-7), Pakistan's Muhammad Salman (14-6) in the quarter-finals and South Africa's Terry Van Rensburg (10-9) in the semi-finals. In the gold medal match, Balfour droopped a 10-0 decision against India's 31-year old Yogeshwar Dutt, the 2012 Olympic Bronze Medalist and two-time Commonwealth gold medalist (2010, 2014). Balfour will be representing Canada at the upcoming 2014 Junior World Championships.
The 27-year old Gallays posted a 1-1 record capturing the bronze at 53kg. In the quarter-finals she dropped an 11-0 decision to Nigeria's Odunayo Adekuoroye. In the bronze medal match she pinned Cameroon's Christelle Lemofack Letchidjio. Â
Brock club wrestler Chris Laverick went 0-1 with a loss to Nigeria's Melvin Bibo, the eventual bronze medalist. Former Badger Jasmine Mian captured bronze at 48kg.
