Badgers advance to second consecutive Baggataway Cup final

Second-year middie Kurtis Woodland scored five goals in leading the Brock Badgers to a 12-11 overtime victory over the Trent Excalibur in semi-final action at the 2018 Baggataway Cup on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 10) at Varsity Stadium.

With the win, the Badgers advance to their second straight, and fifth in the past 10 seasons, Baggataway Cup final, where they will face the winner of Western/McGill tomorrow (Nov. 11) at 1 p.m.

Woodland's five goals led all players, while second-year attack Campbell Parker scored two goals, including the overtime winner with five seconds remaining, to seal the victory.

Fifth-year middle Cole McWilliams led the Excalibur with four goals and one assist, while sophomore attack Jeff Fernandes scored two goals and had one assist in the narrow loss.

The Badgers got out to a 3-0 lead as Woodland sandwiched a Connor Brown goal with two of his own. The Excalibur then woke up, going on a 4-1 streak, led by two goals from Fernandes, to even the score at 4-4 after 20 minutes of action.

Brock took control with a 3-0 shutout second quarter as Parker, Connor Ham and Woodland gave the Badgers a 7-4 lead at halftime.

Trent's Nick Chaykowsky scored early in the third quarter to bring the game back within two, but Grayson Houghton added a late marker for Brock to restore the three-goal advantage heading into the final frame.

Chaykowsky netted his second of the game early in the fourth quarter, but the Badgers again answered the call as Jordan Gillis found the back of the net two minutes later. Trent then opened the flood gates as McWilliams scored twice and Adam Perroni tied it with 2:30 remaining to force overtime.

With Brock leading 11-10 in the final minute of play, McWilliams evened the score with just 24 seconds remaining, but Parker proved to be the game's hero, scoring with five seconds remaining to punch Brock's ticket to the finals.
