Sam Leclair scored the game-winning goal with less than five minutes remaining as the Brock Badgers narrowly defeated the Guelph Gryphons 12-11 on the road on Sunday.
Guelph led 6-5 at halftime after scoring four consecutive goals.
However, first-year Badgers attack William McNabb filled the net with five goals to spark the Brock offence.
Connor Brown and Nate Braniff each tallied two goals, while Kurtis Woodland and Jeff Wittig each added a goal and an assist.
Sam Leclair chipped in a goal.
Tyrus Rehanek, Sebastien Beaudoin and Bradley Fannell each collected an assist.
Netminder Simon Bellamy faced 17 shots. Brock fired 20 shots at Guelph goalie Hayden Walsh.
Up next, the Badgers (2-0) host Guelph in their home opener on Friday, Sept. 27 at Brock Alumni Field. Game begins at 8 p.m.
FOUR BADGERS SELECTED IN NLL DRAFT
A total of four Brock Badgers were selected in the 34th annual National Lacrosse League Entry Draft in Philadelphia on Sept. 17.
Alex Pace (Philadelphia), William McNabb (Colorado), Jordan Gillis (Georgia) and Brad Fannell (Halifax) were each chosen by their respective clubs.
"We're very happy for our four players," said head coach Tim Luey. "They're all great lacrosse players and great team players. I'm excited for them to get an opportunity to compete at the highest level."
With the season set to begin on Nov. 29, the newest group of rookies will look to make an impression with their respective new teams.
Pace, a fourth-year midfielder from Halifax who is studying Medical Sciences, was drafted in the second round (20th overall) by the draft hosts, Philadelphia Wings, with the 20th overall pick.
McNabb joins new Badger teammate Jeffery Wittig in Colorado after the Mammoth took him in the second round (31st overall). McNabb is a first-year forward from Owen Sound, Ont.
Gillis, a third-year midfielder from Stoney Creek, Ont, was taken by the Georgia Swarm in fifth round. The Stoney Creek native is studying Kinesiology. In the sixth round, Fannell was scooped up by the Halifax Thunderbirds. The St. Catharines-born defenceman is taking Child and Youth Studies.
