Badgers win national ringette tournament

The Brock Badgers ringette team captured the University Challenge Cup on Dec. 31.

The Brock Badgers ringette team won a national title at the University Challenge Cup, which was hosted by Laurier University and Ringette Ontario, on Dec. 31.

The Badgers skated undefeated through the three-day tournament to finish with a record of 9-0.

Jordyn Cousins scored the game-winning goal in overtime as Brock defeated Lethbridge 5-4.
"All week we played as a whole team, not once did we ever give up," said captain Reagan Hayer. "Accomplishing this win with this group of girls is something I will never forget."

Lethbridge led Brock 3-2 midway through the second until the Badgers worked their way back thanks to a game-tying goal by second-year forward Natalie Reay.

In the third, Lethbridge looked like they were going to win after scoring with 49 seconds remaining, however fourth-year forward Brienne Paterson replied for the Badgers with 15 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

Brock outscored opponents 62-27.

"As a coach I couldn't have been prouder of the team on or off the ice," said head coach Glenn Hayter. "It was a fabulous run going 9-0 at a national event."

The tournament consisted of 15 universities from across Canada.

Up next, the Badgers are preparing for a tournament in Richmond Hill at the end of the month. Brock will return to Richmond Hill in March to compete at provincials.
