The Brock women's basketball team will compete for a provincial crown which carries the namesake of a Brock legend.
The Badgers will go toe-to-toe with the Ryerson Rams in the OUA Critelli Cup Final at Mattamy Athletic Centre in downtown Toronto on Saturday, Feb. 29 at 6 p.m. Tickets
The trophy is named in honour of former Brock basketball coach and assistant athletic director Chris Critelli. Brock has won the OUA title once, in 1983.
"I am so happy for them," said Critelli. "I'm very proud of them and I am looking forward to being at the game. It's worth it to see them in this moment."
The Badgers, ranked sixth in the country, have taken on a bit of an underdog identity and are enjoying proving people wrong.
Brock upset the fifth-ranked Western Mustangs by a score of 69-65 in the OUA semi-finals in London on Feb. 26. Prior to that, the Badgers took down the higher-ranked Windsor Lancers 61-57 in the quarter-finals on Feb. 22.
Brock is 1-1 versus Ryerson this season. Brock opened this campaign at home with a 68-58 win over Ryerson on Oct. 26. It was the first time the Badgers had beaten the Rams since 2013. On Feb. 1, the Badgers lost 81-66 to the Rams in Toronto.
The Rams finished one win (18-4) ahead of the Badgers (17-5) in the OUA Central division. It's the first time Ryerson has hosted the league championship.
The Badgers have already earned their way to the 2020 U SPORTS Women's Final 8 tournament in Ottawa from March 5-8.
Reaching U SPORTS will mark the first time Brock has competed for a women's basketball national championship since 2001-02. The Badgers have never won a national title for women's basketball.
