Brock women’s hockey player signs with Buffalo Beauts

Former Brock Badgers women's hockey forward Hunter Accursi (BPH '20) has signed a professional hockey contract after graduating from Brock University with a degree in Public Health in June.

Accursi completed the deal to play for the Buffalo Beauts of the National Women's Hockey League on Thursday, Sept. 10.

"After closely following her career at Brock, we felt Hunter was a perfect fit for the Beauts' lineup for the upcoming season," said Buffalo general manager Nate Oliver. "We got to see her in person during our exhibition game against the Badgers last season, and the coaches and I were really impressed. Hunter plays a complete game in all three zones. She's a solid playmaker and she is relentless."

A 22-year-old from Ancaster, Accursi is looking forward to playing hockey for the first time alongside her older sister, Taylor, who has been a member of the Beauts for three seasons and led the team in scoring last year.

"It's a bonus to be able to play on the same team as my sister," said Accursi. "I have always had an interest in playing professional hockey, especially after watching the team for a few years. Our exhibition game against the Beauts really opened the means of communication for playing for them next season."

Accursi is known for her defensive prowess as a shut-down forward. Brock head coach Margot Page said Buffalo is getting a player that is effective at rattling opponents.

"Hunter has a lot of speed that will bolster the Beauts line up. She works hard to be first on the forecheck and loves disrupting the opponents breakouts," said Page. "What is great about Hunter is that she is very competitive, but brings a calm and positive presence to the team. She has a ton of fun when she plays and it is contagious."

She scored 10 goals and 16 points in 87 Ontario University Athletics games during four seasons with the Badgers.

"I really enjoyed the educational experience and student life at Brock," she said. "My four years of playing with the Badgers taught me some major life lessons.
"Being a varsity athlete is no simple task. Playing hockey for Brock made me mentally tough, taught me to be resilient and, most importantly, how to treat people."
