Badgers move into second place with win over Waterloo

The Brock men's rugby team took advantage of the bye week in their Ontario University Athletics (OUA) schedule.

The Badgers reworked their defence and installed several vital elements to their game. Their newfound attack and defence were on full display en route to a 47-5 victory over Waterloo at Alumni Field on Saturday, Oct. 16.

"The execution was there. The new wrinkles we put in helped us today, and today we saw the fruits of our labour with the hard work we put in the last couple of weeks," said head coach Shawn Windsor.

Carter Bondy finished with five converts as Brock's offence was a buzzsaw in the first half. The Badgers controlled the game early and set up camp in the end zone with repeated tries.

The home side led 35-5 by halftime on a pair of tries courtesy of Liam Boeyenga and singles from Evan Bryant-McKay and Tim Sullivan.

Boeyenga pulled off both of his tries at breakneck speed while leaving the Warriors' defenders in the dust.

"At the beginning of the year, we asked Liam to move from the wing to the centre because he's versatile," Windsor said. "He's a big, strong runner. He didn't complain one bit about the switch. Liam's a selfless player. We love the way Liam plays, and he does whatever the team needs him to."

The first half was full of cheers and celebrations for the Badgers. However, they met adversity in the second half with a series of penalty trouble.

Zach Zorbas added a late try, but most of the half was full of whistles in Brock's end.

Windsor said they would need to tidy their game up before their final regular-season match in Waterloo versus Laurier on Friday, Oct. 22.

"We lost our discipline in the second. We made some mistakes, but we'll focus on cleaning those up in time for next week," he said. "If we play Laurier that way, then they will capitalize on our mistakes."

Brock (2-1) is tied with Laurier (2-1) for second place in the OUA West behind undefeated Guelph (4-0). The winner between Brock and Laurier will advance to the semifinals.

"We've got a big game next week. That's why it was good for us to build that lead in the first half because we can get some of the guys who have played a lot of minutes this season some rest," Windsor said. "In turn, it was a great opportunity to give some of our younger players live game experience."

First-year players Noah Coleman and Jacob Scanga made their varsity debut for Brock, while Reon White stepped in later in the match and delivered a strong game at fly-half.
