KINGSTON - The Brock Badgers men's and women's fencing teams opened their 2022-23 campaign at the Queen's Invitational this past weekend.
A strong start for Badgers fencing, the teams picked up several podium results.
The first medal of the event for Brock came in the men's épée category as first-year Badger
Nicholas Gutierrez-Sarabia placed third overall. Gutierrez-Srabia opened his day with three victories, knocking off two opponents from Western and a challenger from McMaster. Entering the medal matches, he then fell to his opponent from Toronto in an exciting 15-13 showdown.
Then in the women's foil event,
Sara Fellman captured first overall going undefeated in victories over Queen's (15-7), Western (15-5), and finally RMC (15-11).
The Badgers medal haul was concluded on the second day of the event with
Jacqueline Chen finishing third in the women's sabre category. Following a loss in her first bout of the round robin, she rebounded to go undefeated through pool play, until her eventual defeat versus RMC placed her on the third step.
"It was a very eventful invitational for us to start the new season," mentioned Brock fencing head coach
Tim Stang. "It was great to see Nicholas [Gutierrez-Sarabia] earn a medal in his first competition in Canada, and for Sara [Fellman] and Jacqueline [Chen] to pick up top results in their events this weekend as well. Overall some of our best ever results."
