Brock men’s fencing ready to peak at provincial championship

All eyes this weekend will be on the top male fencers in the province.

The two-day Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Men's Fencing Championship in Ottawa will start on Saturday, March 16 with the individual competition before moving on to the team relay events on Sunday, March 17.

For the Brock Badgers, this season has been one of building continuous momentum. Coming off a ninth place finish last year and a slow start in 2024, the team has had strong results, including most recently at Winterfest in early February where multiple men's fencers went far in the direct elimination round.

Leading the charge this season has been Nicholas Gutierrez-Sarabia who took a gold in epee at Winterfest and has two sixth place finishes to his name (Brock Open and Western Open). The reigning OUA silver medalist in epee is hungry for gold in 2024 and has been constantly improving in hopes of reaching that goal.

Another epee fencer to watch out for is senior Nathaniel McDonnell. Coming from a long line of epeeists, McDonnell is hoping that family legacy and experience will lead to strong results in Ottawa. Nathaniel's brother Evan is a former OUA champion in epee for the Trent Excalibur and his dad is a former OUA coach who still fences in the veteran division.

Robert Cruickshank is hoping to follow up his third-place performance at the Newmarket Invitational with success at the provincial championship. The first year Neuroscience major is a dynamic fencer who comes from the solid West End Swords program. Cruickshank is hoping to get some valuable experience this weekend, going up against the best university fencers.

In sabre, Benjmain Wignall looks to make an impact in his second year with the Badgers. The transfer from the Carleton Ravens is a hard worker who will look to put all that practice into action against the top university competition.
