ST CATHARINES - Welcoming a large contingent of competitors from various university and club teams from across the country, the Brock Badgers hosted the return of the Brock Open at Ian D. Beddis Gymnasium this past weekend.
An annual event which last took place on campus in November 2019, the Brock Open saw one of the largest competitor pools of any recent event, serving as an open category competition which did not limit participants to just universities. The two-day event took over the entirety of Ian D. Beddis Gymnasium and saw fencers compete in categories ranging from senior and junior, to U15 and cadet.
Achieving the top result for the Brock Badgers,
Nicholas Gutierrez-Sarabia continued his strong start to the season with a second place podium finish in the U20 men's epee category. Sarabia earned two wins over Big Bear Fencing, a victory over York, and very tightly contested 15-12 semifinal win over Toronto, before falling in the junior epee final to the Stratford Fencing Club. This followed a 12th place finish for the Badgers Hungarian fencer in the extremely competitive senior men's epee, which featured 100 total participants in the single category alone.
Other top results for Brock included 6th place in the senior women's foil for
Sara Fellman, 15th in the senior men's epee for
Aryan Jhaveri, and 20th overall for
Danielle Martin in the senior women's epee category.
The Badgers have one more competition to conclude the fall semester, next heading to London for the Western Invitational from December 4-5.
Next competition: December 4-5 • Western Invitational - London, ON
