ST CATHARINES - Tied heading into the final quarter of action at Alumni Field, an
Aidan Buis goal in the final two minutes secured a 6-5 win for the Badgers on Saturday afternoon versus the Toronto Varsity Blues.
Welcoming alumni to Brock as part of Homecoming weekend at the university, a full crowd was on hand to watch the exciting matchup. Those in the stands were treated in the early going as Brock was able to build a 5-1 heading into halftime. First half scoring for the Badgers was led by a first quarter hat-trick from
Andrew Rybka, while
Mitchell Armstrong and
Blair Pachereva added single markers in the second frame.
However, a strong third quarter from the Varsity Blues resulted in four unanswered goals and a 5-5 deadlock heading into the final period. Despite the rough third quarter, Badger goalie
Connor O'Toole was outstanding in the game registering double-digit saves including several clutch efforts in the fourth quarter. This strong defensive effort led to the late posession for the Badgers and the game-winning goal courtesy Buis.
In addition to his game-winning effort, Buis was also honoured at halftime in a special presentation of the recently established Paul Miller Lacrosse Award. The scholarship fund was founded in memory of the late Paul Miller by his wife Stephanie, along with the support of family and friends, and former teammates of Paul's from his time as a Brock Badger. This evening marked the second edition of the award which is intended to support a Brock men's lacrosse student-athlete who displays both dedication and perseverance to his team. Members of the Miller family, along with several of Paul's former Badgers teammates were on-hand to present the award to Buis during the halftime presentation.
Next up, Brock and Toronto will get a rematch as the Badgers will head to Varsity Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 1 for a road contest.
