ST. CATHARINES - Hosting the best from across the OUA, the Brock Badgers wrestling team welcomed competitors for the annual Brock Open inside Ian Beddis Gym this past weekend.
Several Brock Badgers reached the podium with a variety of weight classes competing on both the men's and women's side of the draw.
Opening with the women,
Brianna Fraser and
Vanessa Keefe captured first placed in the women's 76kg and 72kg categories, respectively. For Fraser, she knocked off Queen's with a fall victory in the quarter-finals, before defeating both Algoma in the semifinal and Concordia in the first place match with 10-0 technical fall wins. Meanwhile, Keefe received a bye to her semifinal where she earned a 10-0 technical fall win over McMaster, before defeating Western 12-2 in the 72kg final.
Also achieving top five results on the women's side of the draw,
Samantha Adams placed second in the 67kg event, while
Mia Friesen reachd the second step in the 59kg category. Then in a very competitive 63kg weight class, the Badgers saw
Jessica Tillmanns finsih fourth and
Michaela Rankin place fifth overall. Rounding out Brock's female competitors with top five results,
Daina Morris-Armstrong earned a fourth place result in the 53kg competition.
Jumping over to the men, a quartet of Badgers in
Bobby Narwal,
Roger Li,
Gabriel Blanchette, and
Callum Knox continued with their strong 2022-23 campaigns so far, with each finishing second overall in their weight classes. For Narwal in the 72kg event, the veteran Brock wrestler earned wins over Lakehead, Western, and Vanier College, before dropping the final match to his counterpart from the Brock Wrestling Club. Competing in the 125kg category, Li defeated McMaster and York, before dropping his third match in 3-1 decision to another McMaster competitor. Blanchette knocked off TMU, York, and Akhara, before falling in the 68kg final to Guelph. Finally, after dropping his first match in the 100kg event, Knox was able to rebound with victories over Toronto and TMU to reach the second step.
Also finishing top five at the open invitational for the Badgers,
Max Budgey earned a fourth place result in the 76kg category, while
Mark Summers also placed fourth in the 90kg event.
Gabriel Sementilli achieved a fifth place finish in the men's 57kg event.
A busy schedule, next up for the Badgers will be the Guelph Open taking place this coming Sunday, Jan. 22.
