ST. CATHARINES – Madalyn Weinert (St. Catharines, ON) of the women's basketball team and
Adam Berg (Calgary, AB) of the men's hockey team have been named the Brock University athletes of the week for the period ending January 22, 2023.
Weinert, a second-year Medical Sciences student, delivered another career performance to aid in a come-from-behind victory over the York Lions this past Saturday at Bob Davis Gym. The sophomore sensation tallied a new single game career best 34 points as the Badgers completed a second half comeback in front of the home crowd. Weinert also set a new career-high with five blocks defensively, while adding nine rebounds, one assist, and one steal to round out her Saturday stat line. Earlier in the week, she also notched a team-high 15 points in a loss to McMaster on Wednesday, reaching double-digit points in 12 of 14 games now this season. Weinert is currently tied for fifth in the OUA scoring racing averaging 17.4 points per game, while also ranking fourth in total blocks and fifth in total rebounds.
Berg, a fourth-year Business Communications major, was a driving force for the Badgers offence and powerplay in back-to-back wins for Brock this past weekend. The veteran forward began his action packed performances with three points in the Badgers 5-2 win at Western on Friday scoring two goals, including a powerplay marker, before assisting on the eventual game-winner. Berg then set a new single game career-high with five points for the Badgers in a 7-4 victory over No. 6 Windsor Lancers on Saturday. With two goals, including the game-winner, and three assists, he moved himself into the OUA top 10 in both goals and points, while also setting a new single season career-high in both categories with six games still remaining in the regular season schedule.
The Brock women's basketball team are next on the road to challenge the Nipissing Lakers in North Bay on Friday, Jan. 27, while the men's hockey team are set to host the Toronto Varsity Blues at Canada Games Park on the same day.
