Men's Swimming Theo Wan

Badgers earn overall gold at Guelph Sprint Invitational

Brock's men's and women's swimming teams traveled to Guelph this past Saturday (Oct. 14) for the OUA Sprint Invitational and came away with the overall win, with a combined score of 922 points. 

Both the men's (495 points) and women's (427 points) teams placed second in their respective divisions.  

On the women's individual side, Tatum O'Connor captured gold in the 50m backstroke (31.18), while placing fourth in the 50m butterfly (30.68), with a mere 16 milliseconds separating her from the third-place finisher. Teammate Cora Holt earned a third-place finish in the 50m backstroke (32.60).  

Julien Legault earned the top individual result on the men's side, finishing with a silver in the 50m backstroke with a time of 27.85. Anthony Gunn finished the 50m butterfly in 26.85, giving him a third-place finish. 

The relays were strong for the Badgers on Saturday, with the men's 100m medley relay team (Legault, Owen Googe, Gunn, Liam McKenna) earning a gold medal (50.48). Alex McCormick, Alex Walker, Liam Boyle and Blake Bishop finished just below them (52.47). 

The women's 100m freestyle (Tatum O'Connor, Quinn Mersereau, Alivia Chiumera, Erika Savage) placing second and the men's 100m freestyle of team of Evan Karlov, Chris Ball, Landon Daschuk and Mario Agostino touching the wall in 47.04 to earn third. 

The women's 200m medley relay team of O'Connor, Chiumera, Savage and Grace Malcolm earned 32 points with a third-place result. In the men's version of the relay (McCormick, Walker, Aidan Johnston, Liam McKenna), the Badgers swam in a time of 1:52.39, good for third place.  

Gunn, Legault, Ball and Karlov made up the men's 200m freestyle relay team and earned another podium finish for Brock (1:42.18). 

O'Connor and Chiumera along with Jami Fuson, Bella Seabrook swam to a second-place result in the women's 400m medley relay (4:46.73). The men's team of Legault, Walker, Gunn and Ball matched the women's finish of second (4:06.01). 

The last podium finish in the relays went to the women's 400m freestyle relay team (Savage, Mersereau, Kendra Hussey, Sydney Peace) who swam in a time of 4:22.28.  

Their meet weekend continues tomorrow (Oct. 15) with the Badger Invitational at the Eleanor Misener Aquatic Centre.
