A member of the Brock women's basketball team received a national award on Wednesday, Nov. 8.
Â
Madalyn Weinert was named U SPORTS Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Nov. 5 after leading her team to opening season victories last weekend.
Â
Weinert led the Badgers to back-to-back victories over Toronto and York to kick off the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) women's basketball season at Bob Davis Gymnasium.
Â
"It's incredible to start the season with two wins at home," Weinert said. "It's always positive to start strong to build team confidence and prove that we are going to fight in every game."
Â
Weinert scored a game-high 29 points and collected nine rebounds while shooting .500 (10-of-20) during a 79-69 win over the Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday, Nov. 3.
Â
The Badgers trailed the Blues in the second half of the game before Brock responded by outscoring Toronto 19-9 in the fourth quarter.
Â
"That comeback shows we aren't willing to give up even when things aren't going our way," said Weinert, who netted six points in the frame. "Early in the season, it's important to learn how to figure things out and find a new way to attack the defence when you get in a rut. I'm thankful we were able to learn from our mistakes and pull off the win."
Â
Against the York Lions, Weinert posted 24 points while dishing out six assists as Brock won 82-51. She secured a game-high nine rebounds, and added three blocks. She shot .688 (11-of-16) from the field.
Â
A third-year Medical Sciences student from St. Catharines, Weinert is also the co-vice president member of the Brock Sports Student-Athlete Leadership Council (SALC).
