Host Badgers compete at OUA Men's and Women's Fencing Championships

ST. CATHARINES - The Brock Badgers wrapped up hosting both Women's and Men's Fencing Championships on Sunday, Feb. 19.
 
The two championships featured 13 universities province across three days at Ian Beddis Gymnasium.
 
Brock men's epeeist Nicholas Gutierrez-Sarabia was awarded the George Tully Trophy at the conclusion of the tournament. The trophy is presented to a men's fencer who is most proficient in skill, style and sportsmanship as determined by a panel of judges.

Gutierrez-Sarabia, a first-year Critical Criminology student from Hungary, captured a silver medal during the individual men's epee final on the second day of the tournament. Colin McCurdy of the Toronto Varsity Blues held off Gutierrez-Sarabia 15-11 in the gold-medal match.
 
On the final day, Gutierrez-Sarabia also helped the men's epee relay team win a bronze medal on Sunday. Gutierrez-Sarabia, Nathaniel McDonnell, Karl Stang and Kendel Hutchinson-Cotoc captured bronze with a 45-42 win over the Western Mustangs.
 
The squad overcame the McMaster Marauders 45-29 in the opening round before falling to the gold-medallist Varsity Blues in the semifinals 45-32.
 
The Brock men's fencing team finished ninth overall with a total of 77 points; The women's fencing team was eighth with 76 points.
 
Sara Fellman, a third-year Studio Arts student from Brooklyn, NY, finished seventh overall in individual women's foil.
 
Fellman helped the Brock women's foil relay team of Amber Briar, Elena Testana and Emily Bonisteel to a fifth-place finish. The Badgers defeated the RMC Paladins 45-26 to take fifth.
