The Brock Badgers' men's and women's fencing teams competed at the Winterfest hosted by the University of Waterloo on Saturday, Feb. 3 and Sunday, Feb. 4 in Waterloo.
In the senior men's épée event,
Nicholas Gutierrez-Sarabia finished first among 56 competitors, earning a gold medal. The Critical Criminology major finished 7-0 in pool play to set himself up as the No. 4 seed in the elimination bracket. The Budapest, Hungary product defeated Tristan Weiler 15-4, advancing to the round of 16 in a matchup against 13
th seed Hamza Shahzadeh. A 15-9 win earned Gutierrez-Sarabia a spot in the final eight, where he would defeat fifth seed Yuki Miyasaka. He followed up this performance with a massive win over top seed James Hong 15-14 before going on to defeat Mohab Mefreh 15-5 in the final to capture his first-ever gold medal.
Sara Fellman earned a fifth-place finish in the senior women's foil event, Fellman went 6-0 in pool poolay, which placed the Studio Art major as the first seed heading into the elimination rounds. Fellman defeated Stephanie Ng 15-8 to advance into the quarter-finals, where she would fall to Stephenaie Shen 15-4.
Leading the men's results was
Robert Cruickshank, who finished 12
th out of 56 competitors in the senior men's foil event, going 5-2 in pool one. In the Round of 64, Cruickshank earned a big 15-1 win over
Josiah Robertson to advance into the round of 32. The Neuroscience major then advanced to the round of 16 after a 15-4 win against Hahn Zhao before dropping the quarter-final contest to Nolan White-Roy 15-12.
Benjamin Wignall was the Badger's best performer in the senior men's sabre event, winning three matchups in the pool and advancing to the round of 32. In the elimination bracket, Wignall defeated Chongyu Shen in the round of 64 by a score of 15-8. His tournament ended after a loss to Jafer Kamoonpuri 15-9 in the Round of 16.

Danielle Martin placed 18
th to lead the Badgers and
Kirsten O'Brien was the lone representive for the Brock Badgers in the senior women's sabre event.
Up next, the Brock Badgers' women's fencing team will be competing at the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Fencing Championship hosted by the University of Toronto from Friday, Feb. 9 to Sunday, Feb. 11 at the University of Toronto's Athletic Centre in Toronto.
