Weinert named OUA Player of the Year, First Team All-Star for second consecutive season

Madalyn Weinert continues to dazzle on the basketball court.

For the second straight year, Weinert has been named the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Player of the Year and a First Team All-Star.

The announcement of the OUA women's basketball award winners and all-stars was made on Wednesday, March 5.

"This is an incredible achievement for Madalyn – back-to-back Player of the Year honours is no small accomplishment," said head coach Shae Dheensaw. "This year, she has elevated her game to new heights, both on the court and as a leader."

Weinert, a local St. Catharines product, led the province in multiple offensive statistical categories including points (480), points per game (21.8), free throw percentage (87.7) and three-point percentage (39.0). Her total points and points per game placed her first in the country while her free throw percentage is tied for first in the nation among players who have played in 60 per cent of their games and made at least two free throws per game.

More than just a scorer, the fourth-year guard/forward also excelled in multiple other facets of the game as she registered 11.9 rebounds per game, 262 rebounds and 42 blocks, finishing second in the province in all three categories.

Along with leading the country in scoring, Weinert also is second in all of U SPORTS in total blocks and is third in rebounds and fourth in rebounds per game.

"Every day, she exemplifies what it means to have an elite work ethic, and she does so with a smile," Dheensaw said. "As a coach, it's impossible not to be in awe of her – her constant growth, not only as a player but as a person is truly inspiring."
