Golden moment: Brock women’s basketball star celebrates GLOBL JAM victory with U23 national team

St. Catharines' Madalyn Weinert has won a gold medal in her first national team experience.

Weinert, who is entering her fifth season with the Brock women's basketball team, was part of the Team Canada women's under-23 team that defeated Team USA (represented by the Texas Longhorns) in a thrilling 72-65 victory in the final of the GLOBL JAM Sunday, Aug. 17.

"I'm so grateful for how this GLOBL JAM experience demonstrated the incredible community and support I have behind me," Weinert said. "Every word of encouragement from friends, family and strangers showed me how much more there is to this game beyond just putting the ball in the net."

The GLOBL JAM was created to give potential senior team athletes international experience and to bridge the gap between top level youth play (U19) to the senior level.

The competition started Wednesday, April 13 and took place at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto. Action was streamed on Sportsnet throughout the week, giving fans at home a chance to watch the future of Canadian basketball.

Canada finished 2-1 in the preliminary round, which included wins over Brazil 104-56 and Puerto Rico 96-46 and a tight 70-61 defeat to Team USA.

Setting her sights back to the Badgers, Weinert returns to the women's basketball team for her final season and is coming off back-to-back Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Player of the Year awards and U SPORTS First Team All-Canadian selections.

Impressively, the Medical Sciences major has been recognized by the OUA in every season she has been with the Badgers, including being named to the OUA All-Rookie Team in 2021-22 and an OUA Second Team All-Star in 2022-23.

The Badgers are coming off a third consecutive trip to the OUA quarterfinals and will get their regular season started Oct. 24 against the Toronto Varsity Blues at 6 p.m.
