It was an unforgettable week for Brock women's basketball head coach Shae Dheensaw, who spent time training some of the world's top young basketball players.
Dheensaw was named to the coaching staff for the women's World Select Team led by TMU Bold head coach Carly Clarke.
The Nike Hoop Summit, an annual game between the USA Junior National Team and a team of top international players, took place at the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon on Saturday, April 12.
"This was a world-class experience," Dheensaw said. "To work with the next generation of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and pro athletes in an elite environment really elevates my knowledge as a coach.
The event brings together elite young talent from around the world and showcases how basketball transcends borders and cultures. The Hoop Summit remains a marquee event where fans can witness the next generation of stars as the sport continues to grow worldwide."
Before the showcase event, the coaching staff spent the week training the athletes, participating in various Nike experiences and competing in a scrimmage against the Portland Lady Generals.
Prior to the Nike Hoop Summit, Dheensaw worked with Clarke for three seasons from 2021-2022 to 2023-24 with the TMU Bold, serving as the lead assistant coach. During the 2021-22 season, the team went undefeated, winning an Ontario University Athletics (OUA) championship and a U SPORTS national title.
Along with Clarke and Dheensaw, Canada was represented by three players – Agot Makeer, Deniya Prawl (who did not play due to injury) and Nyadieng Yeich.
"I am able to leave and come back as a better coach from these experiences," Dheensaw said. "I am excited to bring back some of the things I learned."
Dheensaw's Brock women's basketball team will aim to build on it's recent success in the upcoming 2025-26 sesason, having made three consecutive appearances in the OUA quarterfinals and a U SPORTS fourth-place finish in 2021-22.
