Badgers Weekly Wrap: Sept. 8-14, 2025

The Brock Badgers welcomed another exciting weekend of Ontario University Athletics (OUA) games, highlighted by their Beach Ball Brawl.

Men's Rugby
Saturday, Sept. 13: L 78-5 vs. Guelph Gryphons

The Brock Badgers found themselves in a challenging matchup, falling 78-5 to the four-time defending OUA champion Guelph Gryphons at Alumni Field. Fifth-year fly half Luke Bagshaw scored the Badgers only try of the game. The Gryphons came out strong in the first half, scoring 52 points. In the 63rd minute, the Badgers responded to 26 second-half points scored by the Gryphons as Bagshaw found the end zone.  

Up next, the Badgers travel to London, Ont., to take on the Western Mustangs Saturday, Sep. 20 at 3:30 p.m.

Women's Rugby
Saturday, Sept. 13: L 22-19 at Western Mustangs

The Badgers pushed the No. 6 Western Mustangs to the brink, falling just short in a 22-19 decision at Alumni Field in London, Ont. Three Badgers found the end zone on the afternoon in Brooke Rempel, Jordan Smith and Natasha Toonders, while Paige DeNeve kicked two converts to finish with four points. The first half saw the two teams locked in a tight battle as Western held a slim 10-5 advantage. The Badgers outscored the Mustangs 14-12 in the second half and held a 19-15 lead with just over 13 minutes to play. A late penalty try was awarded to the Mustangs, which ended up being the final score of the match.  

Up next, the Badgers return home for a date with the Queen's Gaels, the 2024 U SPORTS bronze medallists, Saturday, Sept. 20 as part of Homecoming Weekend. Action starts at 1 p.m.

Men's Soccer
Friday, Sept. 12: L 2-0 at Guelph Gryphons | Box Score

The Badgers battled hard in Guelph, Ont., on Friday night at Gryphon Soccer Complex, but ultimately fell to the Gryphons 2-0. First-year goalkeeper Nikola Neskovich recorded his fifth OUA start, and logged his fifth consecutive multi-save contest. Brock put together a strong effort, but Guelph's Fergus Pender buried the opening goal in the 39th minute. Attempting a comeback, the Badgers strung together numerous scoring chances, but the Gryphons doubled their lead in the 90th minute and hung on for the win. The Badgers were outshot 11-9 in the match and 5-2 in shots on target. 

Sunday, Sept. 14: T 2-2 vs. Waterloo Warriors | Box Score

The Badgers hosted the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday afternoon for their Beach Ball Brawl and ended up in a 2-2 draw at Alumni Field. Luca Danesi struck quickly for the Badgers, scoring in the fifth minute to set the tone, as well as recording an assist in the game. This marks six total points for the fourth-year forward, placing him second in the OUA. Gabriel Tardif put an exclamation point on the first half, scoring in the 44th minute to extend the Badgers' lead to two. The Warriors wasted no time in the second frame, scoring in the 50th minute to cut the advantage in half. The Badgers held control of the lead for the majority of the game, but James Arango provided the Warriors with some late game heroics, scoring in the 90th minute to bring the score to a draw. Brock led in the shots department, notching seven to Waterloo's six.

Up next, the Badgers travel to London, Ont., to take on the Western Mustangs in a Friday night clash at Alumni Stadium Friday, Sept. 13 at 8:15 p.m. Following the road contest, the Badgers will return home for a 3:15 p.m. showdown against the Laurier Golden Hawks Sunday, Sept. 21 at Alumni Field.

Women's Soccer
Friday, Sept. 12: L 1-0 at Guelph Gryphons | Box Score

After splitting both matchups last week, the Brock Badgers fell 1-0 to the Guelph Gryphons at Gryphon Soccer Complex in Guelph, Ont., on Friday night. Shae Mitchell registered two saves in the contest, while Kate Halley registered a shot on target. Guelph went up one early, finding the back of the net in the 15th minute. The Badgers kept the Gryphons on their heels, with Halley testing the goalkeeper, recording a shot on target in the 37th minute. The Badgers continued to put up an effort in the offensive zone in the second half, registering a corner kick in the 69th minute. Despite facing 12 shots, Mitchell stood tall, conceding only one goal. Both teams were evenly disciplined, each picking up two yellow cards. 

Sunday, Sept. 14: W 2-0 vs. Waterloo Warriors | Box Score

Looking to bounce back after dropping three points in Guelph, Ont., the Brock Badgers returned home to Alumni Field and secured a 2-0 win. Tia Schaffer led the way, scoring two goals in the contest, with Sabrina Bisante earning an assist on the first goal. Mitchell recorded her third clean sheet of the season, totaling four saves in the match. The Badgers showed pressure early, recording three shots on net within the first nine minutes of the match. Their offensive attack was eventually rewarded when a corner kick by Bisante found the head of Schaffer for a goal in the 29th minute. The Badgers continued to create scoring chances in the second half, with Maleah Pinkston's hard work drawing a penalty in the 84th minute. Schaffer put the game to rest, scoring a brace from the penalty spot in the 88th minute. The Badgers won the shot battle 10 to four, including seven on target, while also remaining disciplined and finishing the match without a booking. 

Up next, the Badgers travel to London, Ont., to take on the Western Mustangs at Mustang Field. The matchup is slated for Friday, Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. They then return home for a Homecoming Weekend contest Sunday, Sept. 21 at 1 p.m. against the Windsor Lancers at Alumni Field.
