On the second night of their road trip to Thunder Bay, Ont., the No. 8 nationally ranked Brock men's basketball team fell 74-56 to the Lakehead Thunderwolves at the C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse, splitting the series. Sarkanovic scored a team-high 13 points, while Isaiah Bujdoso contributed eight points and five rebounds. The Thunderwolves set the tone early, going on a 13-0 run to start the game and finishing the first quarter with a 22-10 lead. The Badgers settled into their offence in the second, with Sarkanovic's eight points in the quarter helping them win the frame 17-14. Entering the second half, the Badgers cut the lead to as much as seven points, but it was the poise of the Thunderwolves that allowed them to close the third quarter with a 60-42 lead. The final frame remained even, with both teams scoring 14 points, sealing the win for Lakehead. The Badgers showed their grit throughout, outscoring the Thunderwolves in second-chance points 14-4, while recording 15 points off turnovers compared to nine from the hosts.

Returning to the C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse for a Monday night rematch, the Badgers fell 84-63 to the Lakehead Thunderwolves in Thunder Bay, Ont., splitting the weekend series.  Two Badgers recorded double-doubles, with Weinert notching a game-high 29 points and 14 rebounds and Janee Harrison contributing an OUA career-high 15 points and 10 rebounds. Despite Brock breaking out to a 7-4 lead in the first quarter, Lakehead responded quickly, going on a 13-6 run to win the first frame 17-13. The Badgers saw 10 points from Weinert as they clawed their way back to a 30-24 lead. However, Lakehead surged back yet again, closing out the quarter with a 35-32 advantage. Although Weinert scored 15 points in the second half to help the Badgers stay competitive, it was the Thunderwolves' 28 fourth-quarter points that helped seal the win. Throughout the contest, the Badgers found success in the interior, winning the rebounding battle 40-34 and scoring 36 points in the paint to the Thunderwolves' 30.

Written by Derek Hansler, Sports Information Student Assistant

On Sunday afternoon, the Brock Badgers men's hockey team closed out a 4-2 win over the York Lions at Canlan Ice Sports in Toronto. Alexis Cournoyer found the back of the net twice in the contest and Ethan Sims and captain Jordan Stock also tallied a goal each. Goaltender Will Hambley was lights out in this one stopping 42 of 44 shots faced. The scoring began 28 seconds into the first period when Stock buried Brock's first to take an early lead. Cournoyer followed this up by scoring his first of the game and Brock's second with five seconds remaining in the opening frame. York slowly clawed back over the span of the second period with a goal before tying the game 40 seconds into the third. The Badgers, however, handled the adversity well before breaking the tie with seven minutes remaining in the third period behind another Cournoyer shot which went on to be the game winner. An insurance marker from Sims was enough to secure the win on the road. The key to closing this game out was timely penalty killing and strong goaltending as Brock killed off all four of York's power-play opportunities while Hambley stopped 14 shots in each period en route to the victory.

Brock will be back in action on Thursday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. when they head to Gryphon Centre Arena in Guelph, Ont., to face the Guelph Gryphons before heading back to Canada Games Park on Sunday, Jan. 25 at 4 p.m. to take on the Windsor Lancers.

Kicking off a weekend doubleheader at Canada Games Park, the Brock Badgers women's hockey team earned a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the Western Mustangs on Friday during its Pink in the Rink game, raising awareness and funds for breast cancer research. Forwards Jenna Duarte, Grace Campbell and Ava Fisher all found their way onto the scoresheet, with Duarte also registering an assist to record her first multi-point game of the year. Megan Thiessen's performance in the crease was also vital to the Badgers' third consecutive victory of the new year, saving 31 of the 33 shots she faced. Duarte opened the scoring on the power play for the only goal of the opening frame while Campbell's shorthanded goal to begin the second period temporarily doubled the lead. This did not hold for long as Western was able to promptly respond on the power play. Fisher's eventual game winner late in the frame restored the two-goal advantage heading into the final period. Despite mounting pressure from the Mustangs in the final 20 minutes, which resulted in one goal, the Badgers held on behind Thiessen's 12 saves in the period. Western controlled the shot department, recording 33 shots to Brock's 17. The Badgers took nine of the 12 total minor penalties throughout the contest, giving up two goals while down one player, but displayed fortitude on defence as they hung on for the win.

Saturday, Jan. 17: L 3-0 vs. Nipissing Lakers | Box Score
Written by Graydon Bebbington, Sports Information Intern

Staying home for their second game in as many days, the Brock Badgers women's hockey team dropped a 3-0 contest to the Nipissing Lakers at Canada Games Park. After a scoreless first period, the Lakers found the back of the net three minutes into the second to open the scoring. Although the Badgers had multiple scoring opportunities throughout the match, the Lakers put the game away in the third, netting two goals within the last five minutes including an empty-netter to seal the win. The Badgers put pressure on the Lakers throughout the 60 minutes, winning the shot battle 28-21, but it was the visitors who made better use of their power plays, scoring one power-play marker to the Badgers' zero.

The Badgers aim to secure two wins next weekend as they host a doubleheader at home at Canada Games Park. The first match will take place against the Waterloo Warriors on Friday, January 23, at 6 p.m., with the second happening the following day against the TMU Bold at 6 p.m.
