In an OUA first-round playoff matchup, the No. 6 seed Brock Badgers women's basketball team took care of business with a 76-63 victory over the No. 11 seed Ottawa Gee-Gees at Bob Davis Gymnasium on Wednesday. Madalyn Weinert led the Badgers with a career-high 37 points and a team-high 17 rebounds, while Jamie Addy added 19 points, including notching five three-pointers. Addy's 14 first-quarter points helped power Brock take a narrow 26-23 lead. Both teams struggled from the field in the second quarter, with the Badgers shooting 33.3 per cent and the Gee-Gees at 25.0 per cent. After holding a five-point halftime lead, Brock's advantage grew to eight at 53-45 after three quarters despite shooting the same percentage as the second. Ottawa cut the lead to one in the fourth, but Weinert took control, scoring 17 points in the final frame to help seal the 13-point win. Three-point shooting proved key as the Badgers went 10-for-32 for 31.3 per cent from beyond the arc compared to 3-for-30 and 10 per cent for the Gee-Gees. Brock also made the most of their second-chance opportunities, holding an 11-4 edge.

The No. 6 seed Brock Badgers fell in narrow fashion 83-77 to the No. 3 seed Windsor Lancers in an OUA quarterfinal matchup on Saturday at the Toldo Lancer Centre in Windsor, Ont. In her final game in a Badgers uniform, Weinert dropped her 22nd double-double of the season with 27 points and 13 rebounds, while Ava Stranges earned a career-high 25 points. The Badgers went 8-for-16 in the first, but Windsor secured eight offensive rebounds and capitalized on second-chance opportunities to take the opening frame 24-20. Stranges took control in the second, providing efficient scoring with 12 points on 62.5 per cent shooting as the Badgers won the quarter 21-18 to trail by just one at halftime. Weinert came alive in the third with 11 points, but the Lancers earned five steals en route to taking the frame 22-21. The product of St. Cathrines combined with Stranges for 10 points in the fourth, but it was not enough to overcome the No. 3 seed in the OUA as Windsor finished with a 19-15 quarter to advance to the semifinals. Brock held the edge in shooting efficiency, hitting 45.5 per cent from the field and 33.3 per cent from three, while Windsor shot 41.7 and 31 per cent in those respective categories.

In a do-or-die play-in matchup to open the OUA  playoffs, the No. 5 OUA West seed Brock Badgers women's hockey team claimed a 2-1 victory over the No. 4 seed Windsor Lancers on Saturday at Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex in Windsor, Ont. Randyll Strongman and Grace Campbell were the goal scorers on the night, while second-year netminder Megan Thiessen was stellar between the pipes, stopping 26 of the 27 shots she faced. Brock weathered an early flurry of offensive pressure from the Lancers during the opening frame as the two teams headed into the first intermission scoreless. Strongman broke the deadlock midway through the second period. Despite a quick response by Windsor, a nifty dangle from Campbell ensured the Badgers ended the frame with a one-goal advantage. The defensive front stood strong throughout the final 20 minutes of play to secure the victory. Despite Brock taking four penalties, compared to Windsor's one, the Badgers killed off every single Lancers' power play.

Wednesday, Feb. 18: W 8-5 vs. Lakehead Thunderwolves (OUA Round 1 Game 1) | Box Score
Written by Graydon Bebbington, Sports Information Intern

During an OUA Round 1 Game 1 contest in a best-of-three series, the Brock Badgers men's hockey team, the No. 6 seed in the West division, won an up-tempo 8-5 contest against the No. 3 seed Lakehead Thunderwolves on Wednesday at Canada Games Park. Tai York scored a hat trick, while Zack Stringer scored two goals of his own. Other players finding the back of the net included Nathan Fox, Ryan Johnstone and Rylan Thiessen. The Badgers opened the scoring 22 seconds into the game when York scored off a rebound. After the Thunderwolves evened the score, Stringer found the back of the net to give the Badgers a 2-1 advantage. Closing the first period, York scored his second of the night, giving the Badgers a 3-1 lead. Power plays were a theme throughout as Stringer made sure on the man advantage when he put the Badgers up 4-1 to start the second period. Both teams traded penalties throughout, but it was Fox who put Brock up 5-1 with a shorthanded goal. The tides shifted in the third period when Lakehead's Nicolas De Grazia scored a natural shorthanded hat trick to cut Brock's lead to 5-4. Despite a threatening run from the Thunderwolves, the Badgers quickly responded from two timely goals from York and Johnstone, respectively. Lakehead scored their fifth on the power play, yet their late push was not enough as Thiessen sealed the contest scoring on the empty net. The Badgers registered four goals with the man advantage, while the Thunderwolves only scored one. Additionally, the Badgers committed just 14 penalty minutes to the Thunderwolves' 35.

Written by Connor Bangham, Sports Information Intern

The Brock Badgers men's hockey team, the No. 6 seed in the West division, dropped a tight 3-2 double overtime decision to the No. 3 seed Lakehead Thunderwolves on Friday at Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay, Ont., forcing a third and deciding game in the series. Alexis Cournoyer and Matt Duarte each found the back of the net for Brock, while Ryan Stepien notched an assist to reach six in the series. Second-year goaltender Ben Bonisteel stood tall in net, stopping 35 of 38 shots in the match. The Badgers struck 12 minutes into the first off an interception from Stepien, which led to a goal from Cournoyer as he tapped the puck into the back of the net. The Thunderwolves answered back two minutes into the second, and neither netminder surrendered a goal for the remainder of the frame. Duarte regained the lead for Brock with just under 12 minutes to play, but Lakehead pulled their goalie and scored the game-tying goal with 1:32 remaining to send the game to an extra frame. In the first overtime period, three more penalties were handed out, with the first two being killed off and the third trickling into a second overtime. Brock's penalty-killing magic came to an end in the fifth period as Lakehead scored 45 seconds in to seal the victory and force Game 3. Penalties were the story of the night, with Brock killing six of seven while Lakehead took only two.

It was a must-win game for both teams as Game 3 of an OUA first-round series took place at Fort William Gardens on Saturday. Silencing the crowd, the No. 6 OUA West seed Badgers defeated and upset the No. 3 OUA West Lakehead Thunderwolves 4-2 on Saturday. Cournoyer scored two goals in the contest, giving him three in his last two games, while Stepien finished the series with eight points after notching a goal and assist. Rounding out the scoring was Johnstone, while Bonisteel was a rock in net, stopping 21 of 23 shots on the way to an impressive 90 saves in the series. The two teams exchanged goals in the first as Lakehead struck first before Brock got its first off the stick of Cournoyer. Like the initial frame, the Thunderwolves were the first team to score in the second. From there, the Badgers delivered three unanswered goals, starting with Cournoyer's second of the night. Stepien was involved in the next two scores as he assisted on Johnstone's breakaway goal before putting in a goal to give Brock a 4-2 lead after two periods. Bonisteel turned aside six shots in the third frame to help seal the victory. Both teams committed eight minutes worth of penalties, but neither side could capitalize on the man advantage, while the Badgers held a slim edge in shots 25-23.

The No. 4 nationally ranked and No. 1 OUA seed Brock Badgers women's volleyball team gave the Bob Davis Gymnasium crowd much to cheer about on Saturday as they bested the No. 8 seed Ottawa Gee-Gees 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-15) in an OUA quarterfinal. Emily Foest notched a game-high 11.5 points from seven kills, three aces and 1.5 blocks. Also finishing in double digits was Daryan Chadwick, who earned 10 from eight kills and two aces. Both teams hit under .200 in the opening set, but it was the Badgers who took it after a Gee-Gee's serving error and back-to-back kills from Chadwick and Foest. The Badgers broke out to an 11-5 lead in the second after Foest earned the 1,000th kill of her career before taking the second set 25-14. Brock and Ottawa were tight throughout the third until the hosts took a three-point advantage at 13-10. The Badgers earned 12 of the next 17 points to win the set as Foest recorded four kills during that stretch. Serving was a strong contributor to the success of the Badgers as they finished with an 8-2 edge. Brock also held Ottawa to just 21 kills with 19 errors on 89 attempts for a measly .022 hitting percentage.
