Madalyn Weinert has cemented her legacy as one of the most accomplished athletes in Brock University's history.
On Thursday, Feb. 26, Ontario University Athletics (OUA) revealed their list of major award winners and all-stars for women's basketball.
Weinert was recognized as the OUA Player of the Year and a First-Team All-Star for the third straight season, capping off a career where she has been named a two-time U SPORTS First-Team All-Canadian, an OUA Second-Team All-Star and an OUA All-Rookie Team selection.
"Madalyn's third OUA Player of the Year award is something truly historic," said head coach Shae Dheensaw. "This is the first time in OUA history that one athlete has earned the honour three times since it was dedicated to a single recipient. What makes this season so special is that, while it was unlike any other individually, her impact went far beyond personal accolades. She elevated everyone around her and set a standard that lifted our entire program."
Weinert, a fifth-year guard/forward, demonstrated tremendous scoring ability this season, leading the country in total points (530), points per game (24.1) and field goals made (196). Her impact was also felt on the defensive side, leading the country in total rebounds (317) and rebounds per game (14.4). Additionally, the Medical Sciences student finished second in U SPORTS and the OUA in free throws (118) and was fifth in the country and third in the province in free throw percentage (86.8%) and blocks (43).
The Badgers made the OUA quarterfinal round for the seventh straight year off the back of Weinert's stellar campaign. The St. Catharines product earned a single-game career high in points and rebounds this season, scoring 37 against the McMaster Marauders on Feb. 26 in an OUA first-round playoff game and collecting 25 boards on Jan. 28 against the York Lions. She also notched 20 double-doubles in 22 regular season games, ending the season with 17 straight.
Weinert finishes her Brock career as the program's all-time leader in multiple statistical categories including total points (2,269), rebounds (1,223), field goals made (833) free throws made (514), blocks (196), among others.
"As she departs Brock, she does so as one of the greatest to ever wear our jersey and unquestionably one of the best to compete in the OUA," Dheensaw said. "Madalyn is a generational talent, and her legacy here will be felt for years to come. It was truly a privilege to coach and bear witness to her work ethic."
