Brock men's rugby captures OUA bronze with 19-12 win over McMaster

2636ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University men's rugby team defeated the McMaster Marauders by the score of 19-12 Saturday afternoon at home to capture the 2014 OUA bronze medal.

"I am very proud of this group of guys," said first year head coach Phil Sullivan. "We had a goal at the start of the season to host a home playoff game and take home a medal. Through hard work and dedication over the last two months we accomplished that goal as a team. It is great to see the graduating players end their careers on a winning note."

Brock took an early 5-0 lead, and added 14 more points before the end of the half, including a highlight reel run from the OUA's leading scorer Connor Fitzsimmons. Scoring for the Badgers were Fitzsimmons (1 try, 2 converts), Ben Harmer (1 try) and Josh Gomer (1 try). 

In the second half, McMaster pushed offensively and cut the lead to 14, after a try from Chris Gordon making it 19-5. The Marauders held the Badgers scoreless the entire second half, and added another try from Gordon and convert from James Leveridge to make it 19-12 with 17 minutes left in regulation.

McMaster looked to tie the game late, but it was the Badgers coming up with big with some key tackles, as they held of the late push to capture bronze in front of a hometown crowd.
