Brock women's curling captures OUA silver; men finish fourth

2851GUELPH, Ont. - The Brock University men's and women's curling teams both had strong performances at the 2015 OUA Curling Championships at the Guelph Curling Club.

The women finished with an overall record of 8-1 to capture the OUA silver medal to advance to the CIS National Championships being hosted by the Laurier Golden Hawks. The men posted a 7-2 overall record finishing fourth overall.

"The seniors led the way at this year's OUA championship," said head coach Murray Etherington.

On the men's side Blake Sandham led the team to a perfect 7-0 record after round robin play. An ankle injury to this season's men's skip resulted in Blake moving from his normal position of second to throwing skip's rocks, which is difficult.

"Blake took on this challenge and rose to the occasion in his final year at Brock," said Etherington. "Unfortunately things did not go the team's way in the playoffs, but these young men worked very hard and to be 4th out of 15 University teams is something that they should be very proud about."

For the women senior's Erin Macaulay and Danielle Robinson not only played at a very high level, but they spurred freshmen Terri Weeks and Jo Francolini to play their best in their first OUA Championship.

"Erin especially performed at her highest level and this year grew into the kind of leader that every team needs," said Etherington. "Her shotmaking, knowledge of the game and how to manage a curling game have gotten better each of her four years at Brock. This women's team along with alternates Sam Morris and Lauren Calvert is without a doubt one of the most cohesive teams that I have coached to date. Their support of each other is just outstanding and is certainly a factor in their success."

The Brock women will now travel to Waterloo to compete at the CIS National Championships in March.

"The support from our coaching staff and all of the curlers in our program has also been outstanding this year and should also be recognized as a reason for our fine showing at this year's OUA championship," said Etherington.
