ST. CATHARINES, ON - The Brock University women's hockey team dropped a tough 3-2 decision to the University of Toronto Varsity Blues in front of a program record 1,003 fans as part of the Clean Sport Awareness Game in support of Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
After a scoreless opening period, the Badgers got on the board first, 1:16 into the second, as
Christina Ieradi (Maple, ON) and
Annie Berg (Beamsville, ON) setup defenseman
Alex Finlayson (Etobicoke, ON) for her first of the season.
Brock would take a 2-0 lead six minutes into the second period, as
Maggie Spratt-Mallick (Caledonia, ON) beat Varsity Blues starter Katey Teekasingh.
Cara Sayles (Welland, ON) and
Kailey Peirson (Kingston, ON) added the assists.
With five minutes left in the second, the Varsity Blues cut the lead in half, as Katherine Gale got an unassisted marker for her second goal of the campaign.
In the third, Toronto outshot the Badgers 19-7 and answered with two goals just four minutes apart to go up 3-2. With 10 minutes left in regulation, the Varsity Blues Lauren Straatman evened the game 2-2. Becki Bowering scored the eventual game-winner, her first of the season, with 6:34 remaining for the road victory.

Jensen Murphy (Kingston, ON) recorded 31 saves in the loss while Toronto's Teekasingh added 20 saves for the win.
