Bondy, Badgers stage epic comeback for playoff spot

Carter Bondy scored the final try, and the Brock men's rugby team pulled off a late comeback to earn a spot in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) playoffs.

The Badgers defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks 28-19 away at Waterloo in front of a large crowd that featured Brock supporters.

"It was one of the most physical and intense games I've played for Brock," said senior flanker Steven Medvesky. "All week, we were preparing for a war, and Laurier certainly delivered."

Heading into the match, Brock and Laurier were tied for second place in the OUA West division, with the winner advancing to the semifinals versus Guelph.

Brock (3-1) will travel to Guelph to take on the Gryphons (4-0) in the OUA West divisional final on Saturday, Oct. 30, at 4 p.m.

"I'm incredibly proud of all the boys for the resilience and heart we showed, especially in the second half," Medvesky said. "This could have been the last game in a Brock jersey for a lot of guys, so coming away with a win was a huge relief and the spark that we need going into the playoffs."

The Badgers trailed 19-11 late in the second half until their senior players kept their hopes alive as Bondy made three penalty kicks, including two converts, for a total of 18 points.

Mitch Wilson and Zach Zorbas each punched in a try.

"The match was incredible. However, we were all aware that whoever won that game was moving on to face Guelph," said senior scrum-half Josh Celebre. "The group of supporters gave us an extra bit of energy when we needed it. The way we won meant the world to me. I didn't want this to be my last game in a Badger jersey, and thanks to everyone's incredible efforts, it won't be. I love these guys."
