Badgers continue undefeated season on the road

The undefeated Brock Badgers men's rugby team picked up another win Saturday (Oct. 14) afternoon in Peterborough. The Badgers defeated Trent Excalibur by a score of 31-20, moving their record to 4-0-1 on the season.

Trent opened the scoring very early in the game but missed the convert. This miss allowed Brock to take the lead on a Noah Coleman try followed by a Steve Commerford conversion in the sixth minute. Brock was able to gain momentum from there, dominating the possession for the rest of the first half. Physical and methodical offense from the Badgers saw them score one more try before halftime courtesy of Luke Bagshaw, with Commerford making another conversion.

Going into the second half with a 14-5 lead, Brock came out on fire scoring two tries in the span of ten minutes. First, in the 42nd minute, Zach Bingham was able to sneak into the corner of the end zone following a lengthy goal line stand from Trent. Then in the 50th minute, Grant Meadows burst through the Trent defensive line for a long run and try, setting up Commerford for a straight on conversion attempt which he made extending Brock's lead to 26-5.

In the 61st minute, Brock used the entire width of the field moving the ball quickly from left to right to eventually find Bagshaw who snuck into the corner of the end zone for his second try of the day. The Sutherland, Ont product celebrated with an emphatic punch of the ball into the air as the Badgers held a 31-5 advantage.

Trent was not going to go down without a fight though. The Excalibur took advantage of a couple timely Badger penalties to score two tries in the 65th and 76th minutes respectively. The conversion attempts on both of the tries were unsuccessful, making the score 31-15 in favor of Brock.

The Excalibur were able to continue their momentum right until the end of the match, scoring another try past the 80-minute mark. Another missed conversion was the last play of the game as the full time whistle was blown and the Badgers secured a 31-20 victory over Trent.

Bagshaw finished the day with two tries, while Commerford made three conversions to lead the Badgers. Commerford now has 30 points on the season, putting him in the Top 10 in stats in the OUA.

Up next, Brock (4-0-1) will look to cap off their undefeated season next Saturday as they travel to Toronto to take on the U of T Varsity Blues (2-2) at 7:30 p.m. in the last game of the season.
