Badgers finish regular season undefeated with win over Varsity Blues

The Brock Badgers men's rugby team defeated the Varsity Blues 36-14 on Saturday (Oct. 21) night at Varsity Stadium. The win gives the Badgers an undefeated regular season record, with five wins and one draw in 2023.

To get the scoring started, the Badgers called upon junior fly half Reon White. The Sherwood Park, AB product started with a penalty kick goal and followed it up with a try to give the Badgers an early 8-0 lead. White chipped in with a conversion in the first half after Grant Meadows scored a try.

Brock held a 15-0 lead, but the Varsity Blues did not go away, scoring a try and then conversion two minutes before halftime.

Third-year hooker Noah Coleman increased the Badgers' lead out of half, scoring the first of two tries on the day in the 53rd minute. White earned another conversion to push the Badgers' advantage to 22-7. The Blues narrowed the Brock lead with a try and conversion of their own, reducing the advantage to eight.

Two minutes after the Blues' score, the Bagers answered with a Reuben Cantwell try and Luke Bagshaw conversion. Coleman scored his second try of the day with two minutes left in the contest and Bagshaw added a convert to punctuate the 36-14 win.

White led all scorers with 12 points as he had one try, two conversions and one penalty kick.

The Badgers will now await their next opponent in the OUA playoffs. With their 5-0-1 record, the Badgers finish second in the OUA standings and will earn a first-round bye. The Badgers will then take on the winner of the Laurier Golden Hawks and Waterloo Warriors, with that matchup taking place next Saturday.

Up next, the Badgers (5-0-1) will play the OUA semifinal at home on Saturday, November 4. Teams and time are still to be determined. Check back on gobadgers.ca for more details as they become available.
